Week 7 and Glenn Curtiss
Dear family and friends
We had an intense week of work. Just got home from church and we are waiting for the dinner to finish cooking (watched pots and all that). So I am writing and Mom is putting in pictures.
Several times we worked in the baptistry and had special experiences with patrons. Mom will share her former student, but so many of the ones I spoke with uplifted me and I hope I uplifted them with what I shared. It was amazing to see the change that came over patrons as they entered the waters of baptism for their ancestors. They went into the waters with some of their worldly looks but came out with a special light and simplicity. The make-up and stylish appearance was abandoned for love of those who have gone on and sacrifice to be there.
One brother in initiatory stands out. Very rough on the outside with tattoos, but he wanted to have one name for the session. It was a special experience bonding with him as he served. Sealings are always special. Mom and I got to be witness couple Friday night in an endowment and I turned down the chance to do the Saturday afternoon to my regret. I was worried about Mom's knees because she had a sealing session after, but I missed letting the Lord bless her and me. Seven sisters showed up for the session and Mom didn't have to kneel even once. I am humbled because our Heavenly Father knows our limitations and He would have taken care of Mom. I was too busy steadying the arc to let the blessings come. (Old Testament story).
On Thursday we had a tremendous day with our friends at the Glenn Curtiss Museum in Hammondsport on Keuka Lake. It was worth the trip. Lots of vintage cars, motorcycles, airplanes and boats. He invented lots of things and the museum has more than just his inventions. He was involved with Alexander Graham Bell in an Inventors club for Aviation and for four years was known as the "fastest man on earth". He rode a motorcycle faster than 130 mph in 1907. Brave man. I was inspired.
We ate in a beautiful setting overlooking the lake. As we drove to and from Hammondsport I had many thoughts about the Nephites and Jaredites living in the area. Last night I wrote short notes to all our home ward missionaries encouraging them.
There was a wonderful spirit in Fast Meeting. I shared the experience of one of the other workers on Saturday. His father had many bad habits and died young. This brother was able to lose these habits when he joined the Church. One night he had a dream in which he saw his father's face. His father only said one thing, "They won't open the gate." The brother understood when he woke up that his father had repented in Spirit Prison but needed the work done so he could leave. The brother did the work so that could happen. That work, freeing the captives, is why we are here.
In Sunday School we taught about knowing how the Father answers prayers. We were grateful for the opportunity. It was touching also.
